  3. experiments using this 
  4. apparatus and method suggest 
  5. that the moon illusion is 
  6. created just as the taking-into-
  7. account theory predicts: The 
  8. apparent size of the moon is 
  9. computed from its perceived 
  10. distance; as its apparent 
  11. distance increases, its size is 
  12. perceived to grow. It was shown 
  13. that, when a scene was used 
  14. that permitted a greater 
  15. apparent distance to the 
  16. horizon or when cloud cover 
  17. was present that added a 
  18. "ceiling" to the sky in addition 
  19. to the "floor" ordinarily 
  20. provided by the terrain, for 
  21. example, the moon illusion 
  22. increased. Under such 
  23. conditions, the magnitude of 
  24. the illusion, expressed as a 
  25. ratio of the perceived size of 
  26. the horizon moon to the 
  27. elevated moon, was 
  28. approximately 1.5 to 1.
